Described is an oxidative method for the chemical purification of waste water using Fenton's reagent, by the action of hydrogen peroxide and iron(II) compounds under acid conditions and the subsequent precipitation of the iron(III) compounds in weakly acid to alkaline conditions. The method is characterized in that the iron(III)-containing sludge produced in addition to the purified waste water is reduced back to iron(II) compounds by chemical or electrical means, and the sludge reduced in this way is recycled into the process. The method proposed ensures a high degree of purification of highly contaminated waste water, and allows the problems associated with the treatment and disposal of the sludge produced by Fenton's reagent to be avoided.
