Method for forming a carriageway which lies below ground level and below the groundwater table

To form a carriageway which lies below ground level and below the groundwater table, a trench is dug. A membrane which is impermeable to water is placed on the bottom of the trench. At the sides of the trench, the ends of the membrane project above the groundwater table. Covering pieces which form a casing running in the longitudinal direction of the trench are placed in the trench. Beneath and next to the covering pieces, the trench is filled with filler material, and a foundation for the roadway is arranged in the covering pieces. Ballast material is placed on the top edges of the covering pieces. The trench which is protected by the membrane is at least partially pumped dry. The ballast materials may be in the form of wall pieces which project above the covering pieces. The wall pieces may be L-shaped in cross section and may be arranged on the top edges of the covering pieces in such a way that one limb of these wall pieces extends vertically and the other limb extends horizontally in a direction away from the casing. The ballast materials, in particular the wall (rubble) pieces may be used to support overhead wires of a superstructure supporting a railway track. The carriageway may be designed for road traffic instead of or in addition to for rail traffic. Branches in the carriageway are achieved by using appropriate covering pieces.
