A method of carrying out an endothermic chemical reaction, whereby a solid reagent is reacted with a gaseous reagent at an elevated temperature of at least 70 DEG C, is described. The method involves mixing the solid reagent with a microwave- absorbing material to form a mixture containing 1-80% by mass of the microwave absorbing material. The mixture is then heated to the reaction temperature in the presence of the gaseous reagent by directing microwave radiation at and into the mixture.
