The piston-cylinder unit comprises a cylindrical tube (10) with two flat ring shaped end surfaces, two opposing gables (11,12), a piston (13), and a connecting rod (14). Each cylinder gable has an inner end surface (18) facing the piston. The seal ring (23) has an outer cylindrical surface which seals against the cylinder tube inner surfaec, and a ring shaped projection extending radially outwards from the cylindrical surface, and locating against the respective cylinder tube end surfaec. It also has a conical inwardly facing surface which works in conjunction with a corresp. outwardly facing conical projection on the cylinder gable, and a ring shaped flange (32). Recesses or deepened formations in the cylinder gables are covered in a sealed manner by the radial flange in order to obviate undesirable harmful space in the cylinder.
