The mud flap for a motor vehicle is fastened around the front and the steerable rear wheels, and comprises a protective plate (2) fastened around a large part of the wheel (1) periphery, at a distance of 1-3 cm from the wheel and 10-20 cm from the road surface.At the side edges are provided strips (6) made of e.g. rubber. The distance between the plate and the trailing edge (4) of the wheel is less than that between the plate and the leading edge.
