Organic carbonates of formula (I) and cyclic organic carbonates of formula (II) are prepd. by reaction of an alcohol R-OH or diol HO-R1-OH with CO (at pressures of 1-100 kg/cm2) in the liq. phase at 25-200 deg.C. in the presence of (a) a halo or (b) a halo and/or a halide ion and an oxidising agent. R = linear or branched 1-10C alkyl or 5-8C cyclo alkyl. R1 = linear or branched alkylene. Pref. the alcohol is methanol, the diol is ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, (a) is bromine or (b) is bromide with oxidising agent pref. H2O2, tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, di-tert.-butyl peroxide, nitrogen oxide, nitric acid, esters of nitric or nitrous acids, nitrate and nitrites of alkaline or alkaline earth metals or ammonium, or peroxydisulphuric acid salts of alkaline or alkaline earth metals.
