Process for the preparation of a Vanadium bis-arene (V(arene)2) from Vanadium oxychloride, aluminium metal, AlCl3 and an arene comprises: (a) contacting Vanadium oxychloride (VOCl3), active aluminium metal and AlCl3 with each other in a liquid arene to transform VOCl3 into a complex cpd. (V(arene)2)+(AlCl4)-; (b) adding a liquid cyclic or acyclic ether to the complex to reduce it to (V(arene)2) and (c) recovering the prod.
