System based on: a) controlled user access to each operation; b) automatic opening of the archive units by means of electrical signals from a computer which actuate locking devices in said units; c) information on the status (open/closed) of the units by means of interruption or switching of other signals which arrive at the computer; d) optical and acoustic signalling from the units; e) automatic addressing or supervision thereof; f) locking for the coincident opening of nearby units; g) magnetic and typographical recording of operations and movement of the archives; h) magnetic or optical and typographical recording of the addresses and the data of the contents; i) alarm for units of unsuitable status; j) protection against alterations to the ordering criteria, against writing errors by comparison with specific data banks, against duplications of the content of units, and against separation of interrelated materials or documents.
