A method and apparatus for testing a shock absorberand/or suspension system of a motor vehicle uses means toraise a wheel and vehicle bodywork to a predetermined heightfor free dropping so as to cause relative vertical motionbetween the wheel and the bodywork, electronic sensingmeans, such as a laser scanner, to sense a characteristic ofthe wheel/bodywork relative motion e.g. the speeddifferential, indicating means for noting the sensedcharacteristic, and comparison means for example in the formof computer apparatus, for comparing the sensedcharacteristic with a corresponding characteristic obtainedfor the vehicle when it has new or as new shock absorbersand suspension system wherby the condition of the shockabsorber and suspension system can be checked.
