The instrument described has a tongue depressor (11) joined to a handle of a suitable type. In order to be able to use the instrument without the need to exert great force and without any danger of damage to the patient's incisors, a palate lifter (9) is associated with the tongue depressor (11), the tongue depressor (11) and palate lifter (9) being mounted so that they can pivot relative to each other to execute a spreading movement, the two being connected to an actuator which produces the spreading movement. This actuator may be designed as a manual actuator whose operating levers (7, 10) are designed as extensions to the tongue depressor (11) and palate lifter (9). In the laryngoscope proposed, damage to the patient's incisors is almost impossible.
