The present invention provides a single step heating and pressurization densification process for providing a carbon-carbon composite. A pitch, either coaltar or petroleum pitches or mesophase pitches, is added to carbon fibers and then heated to approximately 450 DEG C to convert the pitch to a mesomorphic condition pitch which infiltrates the carbon fibers. The combination is further heated to at least 460 DEG C or higher, and under a pressure of approximately 1000-2000 psi, to convert the mesophase condition pitch to a carbon matrix or char which, with the carbon fibers, provides a high density carbon-carbon composite. The composite may be final heat treated to produce a carbon aircraft brake disc.
