The invention provides an experimental model for studying the role of increased capillary transit time of sickle reticulocytes in common complications of sickle cell anemia, as well as a method for preventing such complications in patient suffering from sickle cell anemia. The invention also provides a method of treatment for necrotizing enterocolitis and other diseases characterized by abnormalities of the interactions between erythrocytes and vascular endothelium.
