The present invention provides two novel λB binding proteins, developing brain factor (BBF) I and II, which are temporally and spatially expressed exclusively in developing mammalian brain through about postnatal day 7, and have high DNA-binding activity from about embryonic day 15 through about postnatal day 2. The novel DBF proteins of the present invention further have binding specificity similar to the binding specificity of NF-λB, and when subjected to UV crosslinking, the crosslinked DBF Proteins have a molecular weight from about 110,000 to about 115,000 daltons. Further provided by the present invention are methods of preparing and purifying DBFs. Antibodies specific to the DBFs are provided. Isolated nucleic acids encoding the novel DBFs are also provided, as well as vectors containing the nucleic acids, recombinant host cells transformed with such vectors and nucleic acid probes that hybridize to nucleic acids encoding the DBFs. Additionally, the present invention provides methods of detecting, isolating and purifying nucleic acid molecules encoding DBF I and/or II.
