DEVICE FOR PREPARING SAMPLES OF POWDERED METALS FOR ANALYSIS

A device for the preparation of powdered metal samples (20) for oxygen analysis includes a mold (10) with a central cavity (18) accessible through a tapered throat region (16) on the top of the mold (10). A tin foil sheet (58) is placed in the tapered throat region (16) and pressed into the cavity (18) and thereby formed into a generally cup shaped configuration. A measured amount of the powdered metal (20) is poured into the cup shaped tin foil (58) within the cavity (18) of the mold (10). A tweezers (36) is used to fold the tin foil (58) over thereby encapsulating the powdered metal (20) within the foil (58). The mold (10) is preferably constructed in two pieces with an upper section (12) removable from a base (14). After the tin foil (58) is folded to encapsulate the powdered metal sample (20) within the cavity (18) of the mold (10), the upper section (12) is removed from the base (14) to expose the sample (20) for removal by the operator with the tweezers (36) from the base (14).
