An artificial neural network pattern recognition system, preferably an optical neural network, has an input layer, an output layer and at least first and second intermediate layers. Outputs from the first intermediate layer depend upon the cross-correlation between the fixed weightings of the connections between the input layer and the first intermediate layer, and the input pattern which is fed into the input layer.
