The present invention provides a method for separating 5,7-diene-containing steroids, especially the esters of 3 -ol and 3 -ol from a sterol mixture. The process comprises the steps of: (1) treating the mixture with a cold diene or with a pro-diene precursor which can be oxidized with an oxidizing agent to produce a diels-aldehyde of separated 5,7-diene, Removing adducts from the mixture, and (3) regenerating the 5,7-diene with a suitable reducing agent.
