Sterol-dependent membrane activity of steroidal saponin OSW-1 using spectroscopic and microscopic approaches

OSW-1, a unique steroidal saponin (Figure 1) isolated from the bulbs of Ornithogalum saundersiae,1 displays potent cytostatic activity against various tumor cell lines. The presence of an acylated disaccharide moiety attached to the C16β-OH position of the sapogenin D-ring is found to be important to exhibit this activity.
