The chemical synthesis of the compound (II) from the compound (I) as well as the method of fermentation and isolation of the compounds (I) and (II) which are one kind of ansamycin benzoquinone antibiotics are also disclosed in the present invention. The compounds of the present invention are useful for, but not limited to, cancerous proliferative diseases of mammals, particularly humans. The compounds of the present invention are also expected to be useful in combating certain microorganisms and have utility as immunosuppressants for autoimmune diseases.
