The present invention relates to quaternary nitrogen-containing phosphonate compounds having the general formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters thereof:;The present invention also relates to a pharmaceutical composition containing a safe effective amount of a compound of the invention and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. Thus, the present invention is directed to a method for treating or preventing osteoporosis and arthritis in humans or other mammals, particularly pharmacologic disorders characterized by abnormal calcium and phosphate metabolism such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The method includes administering a safe effective amount of a compound of the invention to a human or other mammal in need of such treatment.
