The magnetic interference field compensation system for a ship uses compensation windings supplied with controlled currents in dependence on a number of measured magnetic field strength values, so that the resultant field at one or more given points has a required value e.g. zero. The magnetic field measurements are provided by sensors (3) extending perpendicular to the ship's hull, coupled via respective adaption circuits to a summation stage, in turn coupled to an electronic processor which calculates the magnetic field strength at a given point, for controlling the currents for the compensation windings.
