Cyclic carbonates (I) of bis(2-hydroxy-3-cycloalkylpheny l)methanes of formula (1) are new, where R1 = H or 1-4 C alkyl; n = 0, 1 or 2. Aromatic polycarbonates (II) of formula (O-A-O-CO)m-(2), where m = less than 10; and A = a gp. of formula (3), are obtd. by polymerising (I). Prepn. of (II) is effected by polymerising (I) in aprotic organic solvent in inert atmos. (exclusion of air and moisture) with alkali metal-organic cpd. or with initiator-catalyst system as used in gp.-transfer polymerisation, at from -20 to +100 deg.C and monomer/solvent wt. ratio 2-30:100, then, after polymerisation has ended, deactivating polymerisation-active centres. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prepn. of shaped articles. (II) have good heat-dimensional stability. (6pp Dwg.No.0/0)
