Monitoring the potential between a sacrificial anode and the steel reinforcement during the placing of the anode in setting reinforced concrete consists of placing also a reference electrode (17) inside the concrete and applying a current pulse between the anode (6) and steel reinforcement (5). The continual potential difference change between reference electrode (17) and anode (6) or steel (5) is measured and when potential of the reference electorde falls to the potential which existed prior to applying the current pulse within a predetermined time interval a short circuit signal is given off. When a potential charge of 0-15% is recorded between reference electrode and steel reinforcement a short circuit signal is given off. The predetermined time over which the potential falls is 1.5-5 sec. and the ratio between duration of current pulse and predetermined time interval is 0.5:1 to 2:1. Sacrificial anodes may be treated one to each mesh or reinforcement. ADVANTAGE - Avoids any short circuiting between the electrodes during concrete setting.
