The device comprises an evaporator (10) which can be heated to a temperature above 100 DEG C. An evaporation chamber (52) of the evaporator communicates via a constriction (60) (stenosis) with a respiratory gas line (26). A pump (98) conveys water in portions into the evaporation chamber (52).
