Process for pressing material by a belt press or double-belt press having at least one endless pressing belt which wraps part of the way around a rotatable heating roll and onto which the, preferably granular, material to be pressed into a web is continuously charged and guided into the pressing nip formed between the pressing belt and the heating roll or the two pressing belts and is compacted under the effect of heat and pressure to form the web material. In the region in which the material to be compacted is fed into the pressing nip, an additional pressure directed substantially radially with respect to the centre axis of the heating roll is exerted onto the side of the pressing belt facing away from the material to be pressed in a linear region running over the belt transversely with respect to the belt-running direction.
