The invention relates to a method for the arbitrary (amendable), functionally effective assignment of an electrotechnical activator, preferably one which can be selected from a multiplicity of electrotechnical activators, in particular a switch or a sensor, to an object, which can be activated, from a multiplicity of objects. The invention further relates to an electrotechnical activation system. The invention is based on the object of specifying a method and a system of the generic types mentioned in the introduction in which it is possible to assign the activator and the object in a less complicated manner. In respect of the method, the object is achieved according to the invention by the fact that the activator and the object to be assigned are rendered ready to communicate for the purpose of exchanging assignment information, in order to emit specific signals containing data which are alternately recorded.
