A process for the filling of pot-shaped depressions (2), formed on a web-like packaging material (1), by means of a stack (9) of sausage slices, cheese slices and the like, which can be carried out by means of a suitable apparatus, is proposed. The apparatus for carrying out the process is equipped with an aligning station (7), at which individual stacks (9) or stack rows can be aligned with a pot-shaped depression (2) or with a row of such pot-shaped depressions. Each pot-shaped depression (2) to be filled is located, with its filling orifice facing down, above an aligned stack (9). By means of a lifting device (12, 25), the stacks (9) are lifted into the pot-shaped depressions (2). So that they cannot fall out before the depressions (2) are overturned by means of a turning drum (31) or the like, they are held, during the overturning, by a controllable holding device (29) which is formed from fork prongs (27) of a supporting member (28) and from supporting bars (30) which follow this in the running direction and which partially surround the turning drum (31).
