In a method for descaling and cleaning rolled stock such as slabs, thin slabs, hot strip or roughed strip in the rolled-hot or cold state, in which the upper and lower faces of the rolled stock are impinged, as the latter passes through a scale scrubber (7), by extremely high-energy water jets directed towards them at an impact angle and emerging from the nozzles or nozzle heads at high speed and in the process the scale layers (FeO; Fe3O4; Fe2O3) are to a very large degree removed, it is proposed, for optimal cleaning of the rolled stock of broken-off scale particles and other solids including the water used for breaking off these particles, that the nozzles or the nozzle heads are enclosed by a housing (25), except for a gap (27) at a small distance from the surface (8) of the rolled stock, that air is extracted from the housing (25) by applying a vacuum and, in an air flow which is thereby produced and enters through the gap (27), a mixture of water, detached scale and other solid particles is entrained, extracted and carried away out of the region of the rolled stock. A vacuum of between 600 and 800 mbar is applied to the housing (25). IMAGE
