A battle practice area is divided into a number of squares each having a stand-by position defined by the centre of a square. In a number, but not all, of the stand-by positions, a mobile high angle fire simulator (figure 1) is positioned which comprises an all-terrain vehicle having on it a multiple firing device 12 for simulation ammunition and is so adapted to communicate with an umpire's station that the position of the simulator can be detected at the umpire's station. The position of the high angle fire simulator can be selected from the umpire's station and selective firing of simulation ammunition can be initiated from the umpire's station. When a target area has been determined a simulator is brought into the firing position, whereafter the practice ammunition is fired by the umpire's station. IMAGE
