When a novel method is used for controlling or regulating a vibratory compaction system for the compaction of moulding materials by means of compacting impacts, that "free-flight travel" is observed which, when the moulding box and moulding material is lifted off from the impacting mass of the vibrating table, occurs until the renewed impact (see Fig. 2). The associated impact phase angle, which can be determined by means of appropriate sensors, is a parameter which is important, above all, for fixing the impact velocity and therefore also the impact acceleration. The impact phase angle is advantageously made the object of a regulating variable, and, in order to perform the regulating function, the influencing variable, which is the oscillation frequency and/or oscillation amplitude, is to be varied. Stone-moulding machines are the typical area of use.
