Process for removing heavy metal ions from wine and related drinks, 100 l of the drink being treated with 5 to 250 g of a polymer which contains 50 to 99.5% by weight of at least one basic vinyl heterocyclic compound having a pKa of at least 3.8 and 0 to 49.5% by weight of another copolymerisable monomer as polymerised components and which is prepared in the absence of oxygen and polymerisation initiators and in the presence of 0.5 to 10% by weight, relative to the monomers, of a crosslinker.
