An air bag inflator for a vehicle occupant restraint system, comprising a cylinder (22) containing a main gas generating charge (68) to inflate an air bag through inflator passages (38, 48) responds to signals from a diagnostic unit (72) to terminate filling of the bag prior to full inflation in the case of an impact of limited severity. This is accomplished by a piston (50) propelled by a secondary charge (70) which is ignited by a second signal from the diagnostic unit. The piston blocks the air bag inflation passages (38) and simultaneously opens vents (34) to discharge the remaining inflation gas. IMAGE
