The aqueous effluents loaded with metal ions, in particular nickel, are depleted by treatment with complexing polymers of said metal ions, their content in metal ions then being low enough to allow their innocuous release into the environment. The complexing polymers are regenerated by acid treatment and reusable after possible neutralization; regeneration solutions are recyclable in treatment baths.
