There are disclosed a process for producing an aromatic compound of the formula (I) which comprises reacting an electrophilic reagent with a compound of the formula (II) shown below: IMAGE (wherein R, X1, X2 and Y are as defined in the specification) to introduce a substituent into the aromatic ring selectively and novel compounds prepared therefrom.
