A gas fire is shut down or prevented from operating if the detected level of exhaust gas flow does not reach a required value when the the fan assisting the exhaust flow is operated at a first speed. The fan can be operated at a second, higher speed if the required level of exhaust flow is not achieved at the first speed and the fire disabled if the required level of exhaust flow is still achieved. The exhaust flow sensor can be a diaphragm pressure switch with its inputs spaced along the exhaust flue.
