PURPOSE: To provide a small-sized and inexpensive positioning device for exactly positioning a multiple coated optical fiber to a ferrule with substantially no influence of impact, such as vibration, and a positioning method. ;CONSTITUTION: The ferrule 5 is fixed to a ferrule supporting base 6 formed with a slit 10 in the optical axis direction (Z direction) of an optical fiber 3 in a position corresponding to its center. While a coated optical fiber ribbon 4 is moved in an X direction by a fine adjustment stage 11, the light from a laser 15 is shined toward the slit 10 from the Y direction and is received by a laser beam array sensor 16. The arranging center position of the fibers 3 is calculated on the basis of the information on the change in the photodetecting intensity of the sensor 16 generated when the fibers 3 cross the slit 10 and the information on the movement of a fine adjustment stage 11. The stage 11 is then moved in the X direction so as to align the position to the position of the slit 10, by which the arranging central position of the optical fibers is aligned to the central position of the ferrule 5.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
