PURPOSE: To provide a method for easily, quickly and accurately detecting the interpole leak and permeation of reaction gases generated at the unit cell stack body of a layer-built fuel cell. CONSTITUTION: A layer-built fuel cell 1 is placed in atmosphere environment at ordinary temperature, and a gas feed pipe 4 having a pressure adjusting water sealer 6 as well as a manometer 5, and connected to a nitrogen gas cylinder 10 via a reducing valve 9, is jointed to a fuel gas feed manifold 2, and pressure is regulated with the valve 9 and the water sealer 6. Also, nitrogen gas pressure in the fuel gas flow grooves of a fuel electrode shown with the pressure indication value of the manometer 7 is kept at a constant value, and a oxygen gas detector 8 is laid on the edge of the substrate of an opposite air electrode, thereby measuring the oxygen concentration of the environment. Interpole gas leak and permeation is, then, detected on the basis of the reduction of the concentration.
