PURPOSE:To obtain a porous bulk mesophase useful as a filler for chro matography, etc., having a large specific surface area, by adding an aromatic oil to pitch containing bulk mesophase which is formed by heat treatment and heat-treating it again. CONSTITUTION:Pitch is heat-treated (preferably in a nitrogen flow at 350-500 deg.C for 0.5-10 hours) until bulk mesophase is formed, to give pitch containing bulk mesophase, which is belended with 1-2 pts. wt. based on 1 pt. wt. pitch of aromatic oil(preferably anthracene oil), heat-treated again at 100-400 deg.C, preferably 300-370 deg.C for 1-24 hours, mesophase is separated by filtration in a hot state and washed with a solvent such as quinoline, etc., to give porous bulk mesophase having =10m2/g, preferably 200-700m2/g specific surface area.
