PURPOSE: To detect insertion of an original holder and the size of a film original with one detection means in the reader of the film original. CONSTITUTION: A mark (e.g. a notch or the like) representing the size of a film original 20 is displayed on the front side of an original and the reader is provided with a detection means 80 by which insertion of the original holder 30 to a carriage 40 is optically detected and the mark of the original holder 30 is optically detected.
