PURPOSE: To provide an electrorheological fluid having such a feature that it increases in viscosity when subjected to an AC or DC electric field, i.e., remarkably exhibiting the so-called Winslow effect. ;CONSTITUTION: A clay-organic composite obtained by introducing at least one type of quaternary ammonium ions having one to three polyoxyalkylene groups represented by the formula, (R-O)nH [wherein R is a 2-6C linear hydrocarbon (including one having a branch); and n is 1 to 50] between the layers of a swelling laminar silicate is sufficiently dried and dispersed in a silicone oil to give the objective fluid.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
