PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer useful as a modifier for vibration-damping rubber, such as vibration-damping materials, or plastics, by polymerizing an alpha-olefin in the presence of a solid catalyst component containing MgCl2 and a Ti compound and trialkylaluminum under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A 6-20C alpha-olefin is polymerized in the presence of (A) a solid catalyst component containing at least MgCl2 and a Ti compound (e.g. TiCl4 or ethoxytitanium trichloride) as a transition metal catalyst component and (B) a trialkylaluminum as an organoaluminum component under conditions of =50 molar ratio (Al/Ti) and =15,000 molar ratio (monomer/Ti) so as to provide =100,000 number-average molecular weight expressed in terms of polystyrene and =10 ratio of weight-average molecular weight to number-average molecular weight. Thereby the aimed high-molecular weight alpha-olefin polymer having a relatively uniform molecular weight with a narrow distribution thereof is obtained in a short time.
