PURPOSE: To reduce the thickness of oxide film formed on the surface of a molten metal column, to prevent the entrapment of the oxide film into an ingot and to improve the surface quality of the ingot by dividing the columnar molten metal into an inner molten metal area and an outer molten metal area and arranging at least one of an auxiliary pouring nozzle in the outer molten metal area. ;CONSTITUTION: The molten A1 is flowed into a pouring trough 6 and poured into each area surrounded with an electromagnetic coil 3 from pouring nozzles 4a-4e arranged at the lower part of the pouring through 6. At this time, the molten metal is separately poured into the inner molten metal area 8 from the pouring nozzle 4a and into the outer molten metal area 9 from the four auxiliary pouring nozzles 4b-4e respectively. At this time, if the direct poured molten metal quantity into the outer molten metal range 9 is too much, since the descending flow on the surface of the molten metal column 10 is developed too much, it is necessary to suitably adjust the pouring quantity of the molten metal. Thereby, the pouring into the outer molten metal area 9 achieves the stability of balance between the electromagnetic force and molten metal static pressure by shifting the molten metal pouring from the lower part of a submerged weir 2 together with the direct pouring through the auxiliary pouring nozzle.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
