PURPOSE: To obtain a boron carbide coated carbon material releasing a small amt. of gas and suitable for use as a material confronting plasma in a nuclear fusion reactor by forming a boron carbide coating film on the surface of a carbon material and heating the resultant coated carbon material under specified conditions. ;CONSTITUTION: The surface of a carbon material is converted into boron carbide by a chemical reaction with baron oxide in an inert atmospher and the resultant boron carbide coated carbon material is heated at ≥1,000°C for about 1hr in a vacuum under 1Pa pressure. By this heating, adsorbed gas is diminished and the objective carbon material is obtd. as a material confronting plasma and having satisfactory gas releasing characteristics.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
