PURPOSE:To perform the digital direct reading and display in the measurement of a specific height, by constituting the title instrument of a level telescope, an image sensor provided on the image forming side thereof and a code means for decoding the code pulse of the output of said sensor. CONSTITUTION:A level instrument 3 consists of an objective lens system 4, a parallel beam system 5 and an eyepiece system 6, while the eyepiece system 6 has a focus matching lens 6 and a focus mirror 6 having a cross hair or stadia hairs applied thereto. The lens system 5 is an automatic horizontal apparatus obtaining a horizontal collimation line regardless of the inclination of the optical axis of the telescope and consists of prisms 5a, 5b and a pendulum prism 5c suspended by yarn. A beam splitter 7 is interposed in the eyepiece system 6 and branched image beams are formed into images on an image sensor 9 through a magnification lens system 8. The sensor 9 is a CCD line sensor, for example, and arranged in a direction wherein a reading line coincides with the arranging direction of the code elements of the bar code of a leveling rod 1. By this constitution, the output of the sensor 9 is led out to a processing circuit system and the read bar code is decoded and an altitude value is displayed.
