PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound from dimethylamine and ethylene oxide, in high selectivity, yield and efficiency, by continuously supplying the raw materials to reaction liquid under specific condition while circulating the produced reaction liquid. CONSTITUTION:Dimethylaminoethanol useful as a raw material for cationic polymeric fluocculant, solvent, surfactant, paint, gas absorbent, raw material for urethane foaming catalyst, etc., is produced by reacting dimethylamine with ethylene oxide. In the above process, dimethylamine and ethylene oxide are continuously supplied to the reaction liquid at a rate of 1/80-1/200 pts.vol., preferably 1/80-1/150 pts.vol. based on the reaction liquid while circulating the liquid. The objective compound can be produced in incomparably high selectivity and yield. Since the general reaction solvent is not used in the present process, the objective compound can be effectively separated and purified.
