PURPOSE:To automate honing stick positioning work by detecting the rotating speed of a shaft while rotating the shaft at low speed to expand a honing stick, and detecting the lowering of this rotating speed down below the specified rotating speed to perform the positioning of the honing stick. CONSTITUTION:In the state of a honing stick 5 being inserted into the hole of a work 7, the frequency of a current supplied to an induction motor 3 is lowered so as to expand the stick 5 while rotating a shaft 11 at low speed. Then, when the stick 5 comes in contact with the inner peripheral surface 71 of the work 7, the rotating speed of the shaft 11 is lowered down below the specified rotating speed. This lowering is detected by a rotating speed detecting means 6 so as to detect the contact of the stick 5 with the inner peripheral surface 71 of the work 7, and thus the positioning of the stick 5 is performed.
