PURPOSE: To provide a method by which an image can be read and written with one optical head without moving the optical head. ;CONSTITUTION: An end face luminescent light receiving/emitting device 11 has a p-n junction structure, two end faces which are parts of the end faces of the p-n junction structure and are exposed and a pair of electrodes through which an electric signal is applied to the p-n junction structure. An image source 13 is provided so as to face the one of the two end faces. An image forming medium 15 is provided so as to face the other end face. By switching the polarity of a bias which is applied to the pair of the electrodes, the light receiving/ emitting device can be selectively used as a light receiving device for the image source or a light emitting device for the image forming medium.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
