PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a block copolymer excellent in compatibility with a resin such as PS and useful as a compatibilizer by germinating the polymerization with an alkylene epithioxide after having polymerized vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon to obtain an SH-terminated polymer, dissolving this polymer in a monomer, polymerizing the monomer and then, recovering the resulting block copolymer. ;SOLUTION: (A) A vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon such as an 8-20C (substituted) styrene is anionically copolymerized and then, this polymerization reaction is terminated with (B) an alkylene epithioxide to obtain an SH-terminated polyvinyl aromatic hydrocarbon which is then dissolved in (C) a monomer such as a styrene/acrylonitrile mixture and methyl methacrylate, and this monomer is subjected to free radical polymerization followed by recovering the resulting block copolymer to obtain the objective copolymer. Further, the anionic copolymerization of component (A) is preferably carried out in cyclohexane in the presence of an alkali metal alkyl such as sec-butyllithium.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
