PURPOSE: To obtain the subject additive and composition containing dimethyl sulfone (and a surfactant), capable of improving the cleansing force, especially a defatting force, not causing the readhesion of an oil to an article to be cleansed, when the article is pulled up from the cleansing liquid, and free from problems on safety, flammability, smell, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: This additive contains dimethyl sulfone. The composition comprises (A) a surfactant such as a compound of formula I [R¹ is 6-18C alkyl, (1-18C alkyl-substituted)phenyl; n is 1-50], a compound of formula II (R² is R¹; m is n), a compound of formula: R³-SO₃H [R³ is 6-22C alkyl, (6-18C alkylsubstituted)phenyl], a compound of formula: R⁴-COOH (R⁴ is 6-22C (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group] or a compound of formula: R⁵-O-R⁶-COOH (R⁵ is 6-18C alkyl; R⁶ is 1-4C alkylene), and (B) the dimethyl sulfone preferably in an amount of 1-100 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the component A.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
