METHOD OF CULTIVATING A VIRUS OF A REPRODUCTIVE AND RESPIRATORY SYNDROME OF PIGS AND ITS USE IN VACCINES

Disclosed is a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) isolate, designated as ISU-P and deposited under the access number ATCC VR 2402, further a process for growing this PRRSV isolate in a tissue culture which is susceptible to infection to replicate the virus to an amount sufficient to protect animals against PRRS or be used in identifying the molecular structure of PRRSV for development of recombinant products, comprising inoculating the virus onto the tissue culture and harvesting the replicated virus. In the present invention there is also claimed a tissue culture containing the above-indicated PRRSV isolate as well as process for preparing a vaccine effective in protecting pigs against PRRS comprising providing PRRSV as recited above, releasing the virus from the tissue culture cells and adjusting antigenic mass by dilution, concentration or extraction to produce an immunologically effective amount of the antigenic mass for a modified live (attenuated), inactivated, subunit or recombinant formulation.
