An isolator (8) for metal-cased gas-insulated h.v. switchgear has two contact carriers (38,39) in a housing (14) filled with the insulating gas. There is a short distance(48) between the facing surfaces(43,47). When switched on, the gap is bridged by the contact (30) moving along its axis(27). This axis is inclined to the longitudinal axis (21) and thus the parallel surfaces of the contact carrier, which are vertical to the contact axis, are also inclined to the longitudinal axis. This second angle between contact surfaces and longitudinal axis lies between twenty-five and thirty-five degrees, preferably thirty degrees. IMAGE
